Why are bats a pest?

Bats are lovely creatures to look at and see in flight but you don’t want to get too close. Despite what you may have heard, bats are clean creatures that rarely carry disease, yet you won’t know that until it’s too late. Around 1% of bats carry rabies, which is no joke.

Plus, bat guano can damage your property and if they roost in your attic or roof space, they can cause serious structural damage.

Aren’t bats protected? 

Bats are a protected species in some states. Check with your local authority or animal control if you want to be sure. The good news is that by using our bat repellent, you’re not harming them, so won’t be contravening any local animal protection laws.

How do I know I have a bat problem?

Bats are nocturnal creatures and will generally avoid human contact, but there are signs you may have a bat problem. The main sign is bat guano. It looks like rat or mouse droppings but it’s much rougher. It will be spread around the roost and may emit an unpleasant odor after a while.

You may also hear scratching or scrabbling in your roof space or attic as bats move around. You may also hear the fluttering of bat wings as they take flight, although this requires a good ear!

You can also stand in your yard at dusk and see if you can see them take flight. Most bats will leave the roost at sundown to find food so this is a good time to look.

How do bat repellents work?

Bat repellents work by emitting ultrasonic frequencies that annoy bats and other critters. Bats use ultrasonic frequencies to navigate so are particularly sensitive to sound. Using one of these bat deterrents can help ‘encourage’ the bats to roost elsewhere and leave your property alone.

The benefit here is that the deterrent doesn’t harm the bats so won’t break any laws and won’t hurt your own pets or children either. They also work on other mammals and rodents too!
